Moon Racing / PTK driver Justin Moon, 15, has been putting in some practice time in his brother Benny's ICC package. After successful tests where he was able to come within a couple tenths of Benny's times, Justin set out to try a few races. The 125-Swedetech ICC is much more powerful than the 80cc package he has been competing in for the last few years. Justin's first race came at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., where he finished a respectable eighth out of some 18 drivers. The entry list was made up of some big names including, Tom Dyer, Alex Speed, Bret Buckwalter and Gary Carlton. Justin made his trademark rocket starts, picking up a few spots, but then lost them as he "experimented" with the difference in power.
Next was a local club race at Prairie City where he finished second in the first heat race and won the second heat. He failed to start the main due to a clutch failure. Still he gained more valuable experience. The most recent was the 2nd round of the "Nor-Cal Fall Classic" held at the famous NNKC Reno Nevada track. Champ Car stand out and Karting Star Memo Gidley was in the pits and stopped by to ask Justin what he thought of the move up to the ICC power.
Justin qualified third with a 47.0 which was pretty good considering the first and second place qualifiers also had a time of 47.0. Fast qualifier was J.J. McTernan, second was Nick Green. Justin finished fourth in the main and came away with more valuable experience.
Last weekend, Justin returned to Infineon for the Jim Russell Kart Racing series where he finished a respectable fourth behind Bret Buckwalter, Eddie Cabelaro and Chris Shaw. Now, it’s off to the SKUSA SuperNationals this Nov. 13-16 for competition in the S1 class. Justin will be using TM Swedetech Power and a SSC, RLV, Arai, SHIFT, NGK, Courtney Concepts, Redline Oil, Aimsports, PTK Long Beach Chassis. His long time tuners Jason Berry and Dean Moon will be turning the wrenches. Justin is hoping for a top five finish which would be awesome for his first "National" event as a senior driver.
