| WKA Pit Board: Komet Piston Valve Clutch and Pipe Changes |
| |
10.05.2011 - WKA announces two changes in the Komet Piston Valve rules effective at this December's Daytona KartWeek. First, the three-hole clutch drum will be the only approved drum for the Komet Piston Valve engine. The original six-hole drum will no longer be allowed. Standardizing on the newer style three-hole drum with a maximum internal diameter of 3.360" will result in reduced stall speed and provide for easier enforcement of the maximum stall speed specification of 5,000 RPM. The lower stall speed should also reduce clutch wear.
Post-race clutch technical inspection will be based primarily on measurement of the drum ID. This change will allow WKA's technical inspectors to discontinue the time consuming and frequently circumvented stall speed test currently conducted before each qualifying, pre-final and final session. Of course, tech inspectors can still utilize the stall speed test at their discretion at any time to ensure individual compliance.
In view of this rule change, Haddock, LTD, Komet Piston Valve importer, is introducing a clutch drum exchange program. According to Lynn Haddock, "Any older six hole drum may be exchanged for the newer three hole type for a special price of $40.00 plus freight. This is less than half of the regular replacement drum price of $88.00. There is no limit on the number of drums that may be exchanged." The replacement program will be in effect until April 1, 2012. Contact Haddock, LTD at 423-698-0847 for details.
WKA is also announcing that the HPV pipes will be legal in the Komet Piston Valve classes through the 2012 competition year. This change is being made to allow competitors who have HPV pipes to continue using them for one more year. Just keep in mind that the HPV pipes must be run 1/8" longer to compensate for the length of the billet cup in the new Komet Piston Port pipes. |
