Strawberry Racing’s Edward Brand clinched the senior Max title with a first final win, and went onto dominate the second final held in a sudden downpour as well. Jack McCarthy and Luke Wooder shared the Honda Cadet spoils, whilst Ross Gunn fought valiantly for both MiniMax wins. Jack Barlow and Lucas Orrock were more double winners, in the Junior Max and Max 177 categories respectively. The meeting, which attracted 180 entries, was the last to be held on the current configuration as the bulldozers rolled in immediately following the last race to complete the new 1382m extended circuit with Suzuka style bridge and a long banked turn. Circuit owner Paul Fletcher will baptise the new extension driving a kart round on Friday 23rd September, then the MSA KF2 British Championship will be held on 2nd October.
The last round of the Rotax Series is at Three Sisters near Wigan, where the remaining four titles will be settled.
Mini Max
It was Jack Mitchell and Philip Rawson who led the way in timed qualifying but Ross Gunn took the first heat as Mitchell non-finished although he won the second. Front runner Luke Knott was excluded from that heat. After a first lap pile-up claimed many drivers, Gunn and Rawson were quickly split by Harry Webb. Josh White entered the fray and as the lead chopped and changed it was Gunn who came out on top of Connor Mills, White and Lemuel Pay. Gunn fell back from the lead to the second group in the other final, as first White and then Mills led. Webb was next, but deposed by White allowing everyone to close right up, Mitchell going out ahead. But Gunn reeled him in to claim his second win, Mills and White following through. And afterwards Webb and Dan Fazzone were both excluded for driving offences.

Topping qualifying and winning both heats put Lucas Orrock on pole for the first final, his main challenger David Griffiths alongside and making a great start to grab the lead. But Orrock slipstreamed through going into the second lap, and next lap Griffiths was back in sixth. He had clipped Orrock’s rear wheel and had a quick spin leaving Andrew Cole in second. Danny Andrew usurped that position, until Griffiths stormed back up on his comeback, to find Orrock too far distant. Tom Holland was unfortunate to have a seized engine. The second final was much more exciting as Orrock and Griffiths traded the lead several times, Orrock finally defending with two laps to run letting Tom Pyttlik close and challenge Griffiths.

Swelled by guests the grid was the largest of the year, requiring two qualifying sessions where Ethan Andrews was the quickest. Jack Young, Steven Prentice and Jack McCarthy were the heat winners with McCarthy earning pole for the first final. He was the first of many leaders including Ben Thompson, Piers Luxford and finally Jack Young who was given the black flag as he crossed the finish ahead of Luke Wooder and McCarthy. Young and Luxford were given 1 lap penalties, and Wooder a 1 place penalty, leaving McCarthy in pole position. Just after the start of the second final the heavens opened and the race was red-flagged, partly to attend to Uzair Master who did take the restart after everyone was permitted to mount wet weather tyres. McCarthy, Wooder and Prentice all shared time in front, but in the last lap shuffle it was Wooder who won out over Kyle Petricca, whilst Young stormed through from the back to 3rd. Mitchell was next, with Luxford also coming through from the back for 5th.

Junior Max
Jack Barlow had a flier at the start of the first final as others tangled up behind, leaving James Singleton, Jay Goodwin and Ryan Morgan chasing. Barlow had been fastest in timed qualifying but only won one heat, Rob Holland and Singleton the others. Holland had topped his group but suffered an exclusion for driving standards putting him in the repechage. Oliver Pidgeley was excluded from the meeting for a modified exhaust. Nathan Harrison moved up to close the gap to Barlow, but had to give way to Morgan by the end. After a start was aborted by a red flag, the lead was traded between Barlow and Singleton until Barlow managed to gap the rest and stay ahead for his second win. Holland worked his way into third but had to give way to Harrison, whilst Singleton was nearly 3s in arrears to the winner. Morgan was excluded from 5th but is appealing so the result is provisional.

Although Sean Babington jumped Edward Brand at the start of the first final, slicing down the inside of the first hairpin, Brand retaliated straight away and managed to throw off his pursuers, the most immediate being Jack Marshall. Babington had actually pipped Brand in the timed qualifying and took one heat win, Brand the other two. Marshall came under pressure and succumbed to John Stewart momentarily before Babington cleared the 3rd place fight and chased Brand, whose win crowned him this year’s ABkC National Champion. Andy King, now transferred to Strawberry Racing, came out on top of that fierce battle for 3rd, Marshall and Ash Hand behind him. The second final was held in the tail end of the rain storm, Brand originally planning to just run a lap and come in, but in the event he stayed out and won handsomely once more. King leapfrogged Babington in the tricky conditions, whilst Shaun Slavin came up from the fifth row to 4th, Barrie Pullinger and Charlie Eastwood chasing.
