Southwest Roadrace Association Finalizing Plans for IKF Road Race Grand Nationals

For the second time in three years, the Southwest Roadrace Association (SWRA) will host the International Kart Federation (IKF) Road Race Grand Nationals at the Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas. The famed event - set for June 15-18 - returns to the ‘Lone Star’ state after SWRA hosted the 2009 edition of the event at the same facility. Similar to that year, this edition of the Grand Nationals will take place over four days on the 2.5-mile course with the same welcoming charm of the SWRA staff and members.

The Eagles Canyon Raceway facility - built in 2007 - is among the most challenging courses in the United States. With 11 corners and an elevation change of 70 feet, no one corner is alike or flat for that matter. The course features four straight-aways at over 1000 feet, allowing the horsepower to be put on display. The quickest lap recorded at the 2009 event was a 1:50.071 by Ryan Kurpiewski in the Unlimited FKE III class with 125 shifterkarts in the 1:51 to 1:55 range and TaG karts at about 2:00 lap times.

To help welcome those from long distances from the state of Texas, the SWRA has offered one free entry ($150 pre-entry value, does not include any other fees) to each competitor who travels 500 miles or more, one way from any racers home mailing address. Those who enter at the track will save the $175 entry fee when registering for their first race. Pre-entry deadline, to save $25 per class entry, is set for midnight on June 10. Another way to entice those who want to race multiple classes, SWRA is offering the ‘All You Can Run’ entry option. For $600, or $675 at the track, you can compete in any class you wish to race in (must have legal kart per class regulations) and the price includes your fee for Wednesday practice.

Over the course of the four days, 29 categories will be racing for the coveted IKF Duffy trophy, named after one of the founders of the sport Frank “Duffy” Livingstone (class must have minimum of five qualified entries). While the bulk of the classes is focused on the shifter and TaG categories, laydown and superkart divisions will be offered as well. A complete list of the can be found on the SWRA website (http://www.swra.org/2011/GrandNationalClasses.pdf).

Announced in late December 2010, SWRA has taken the step to help promote and get the road racing genre of karting out to the general karting public by bringing the eKartingNews.com Trackside Live program to cover this year’s event. Complete with live streaming audio and timing, daily race reports, photos, and event results. EKN Publisher Rob Howden will be providing the play-by-play over the course of the four days with EKN Managing Editor David Cole handling the production and forum updates.

Another unique multimedia aspect to the event will be SWRA’s partnership with Moverati - a company that has developed automated video camera technology that will capture live action and delivers videos for viewing, editing, and sharing on social media outlets. Each driver that is part of the program will wear a small sticker with an RFID tag in it on their helmet that will trigger the video cameras to record their action at various locations around the track. Moverati then puts the footage together and makes it available for the racers to download them from their website, email to family and friends, or post to various video sharing website.

SWRA is still accepting Class Sponsors to for the event. Those wishing to learn more about the opportunity are asked to view the form on the SWRA website (http://www.swra.org/2011/DuffySponsorshipForm.pdf). SWRA currently has signed VP Racing Fuels as an event sponsor and the exclusive fuel supplier for the event in addition to Red Bull, Small Business IT, MJ Drive, Motul USA, SRS Engines, Tony Kart Texas, Dynamic Trophies, Miller & Brown LLP, Trailer Alarms, Petro Communications, Architext, DFW Grating, and Sweetie Pies Ribeyes.

A full IKF Road Race Grand Nationals event schedule can also be found on the SWRA website (http://www.swra.org/2011/2011GNEventSchedule.pdf) along with the event entry form (http://www.swra.org/2011/2011GNEntryForm.pdf)
