The EKN 2011 Chassis Preview Editorial Series was designed during this off-season to provide the karting community with a unique opportunity to become informed of the most popular and successful brands available in the North American market, all from the warmth of their home computers or mobile devices. The karting industry is by no means short on options regarding chassis selection, and our goal with this article series is to help narrow down your choices while educating the community on what exactly is offered by each manufacturer and its United States or Canadian importer/distributor.

Over the past number of years, Top Kart has been among the group at the top of the United States market, thanks to the years of work and development over the course of the last decade. Known early on for their dominance in the Junior and Cadet levels of America, Top Kart has emerged as a one of the top full-line brands in the country. Top Kart won the 2009 EKN Constructors’ Championship thanks to a solid national campaign, capping the season by adding TaG Senior, S5 Stock Moto Junior and TaG Junior victories at the SKUSA SuperNationals in Las Vegas. In 2010, Top Kart swept the Junior championships in the CKI series (TaG Junior and KF3) and went home with the Cadet title as well. The line-up ranges from Kid Karts to all the way to the shifter models, meaning that Top Kart has a chassis to fit the needs for most karters.

Comments: Top Kart was the first company to import a complete Kid Kart to the United States. This kart is designed for children entering karting at the ages of 5 to 8. It is priced reasonably to make the parents’ or grandparents’ first expense to enter karting as affordable as possible. Compared to other engines, the Comer C51 Engine has a very low horsepower rating to keep the kids’ speed adequately regulated.

Comments: This model has been redesigned for 2011 to stay on top of the growing Rotax and Sportsman markets. The Top Kart Cadet program has racked up many championships and has been the chassis that has launched many karting careers, including drivers like Cole Whitt, Taylor Miinch, Tyler Thomas, Mason Chelootz, Santino Ferrucci, Jacob Will, Raquel Martinez, Camden Giese, Colby Araki, Zane Smith, Wyatt May and Ryan Raffa, just to name a few. With the homologation of Cadet chassis now just like full-size chassis, the Cadet chassis will have an evolution every three years to stay up with today’s classes and tires.

Comments: Designed for the WKA Sportsman categories market, this 28mm tube / 30mm axle model was first driven in Daytona in 2010 by Ryan Raffa and Zane Smith. This kart utilizes the same Cadet Blue Eagle specs and dimensions, but it has been stretched from a 950mm wheelbase to a 1020mm wheelbase. The 30mm tubing chassis with the 50mm axle was driven at the 2008 IKF Grand Nationals at Santa Maria by Taylor Miinch, winning three IKF Duffys. This model is still also available for Junior 2 drivers who want a kart without the need for pedal extensions.

Comments: This chassis has the most wins in Top Kart’s history in the USA. It holds the title of the SKUSA SuperNationals 2009 TaG Junior and TaG Senior winners, as well championships in Stars of Karting, WKA, IKF and CKI. In 2010, Top Kart reduced the cost of the package to keep people on fresh equipment going forward, even during the poor economic times. The chassis was driven by many team drivers, including Chris Wehrhiem, during the TaG events at the WKA Daytona KartWeek in December. With the price point, Top Kart has been able to support the regional and local markets so that dealers can keep the sport moving forward.

Comments:The Top Kart Speedy chassis was introduced in mid-2010 to the USA. It is the same chassis that won the championship in the WSK Masters Series KF2 (Antonio Giovinazzi). This chassis has already received some major wins the USA in 2010. The Top Kart Speedy 100cc won the championship in CKI with Kiel Spaulding (TaG Junior) and Raquel Martinez (KF3). Phil DeLaO piloted the same chassis to victory at the Rock Island Grand Prix (Rotax Senior and Parilla Leopard) and the CKI program (KF2). DeLaO and Martinez utilized the Speedy chassis in Portugal when they raced with the factory team. Alec Udell has driven this chassis the last two seasons in Rotax, earning a spot on Team USA to the Rotax Grand Finals. Most recently,the Speedy chassis won the TaG 2 class at this year’s WKA Daytona KartWeek event with Mason Chelootz. The 125cc model has been driven and preformed well with Kyle Wiegand, winning the 2010 Rock Island King of the Streets and North American ICC division. Mason Chelootz and Kiel Spaulding had great outings with the 125cc chassis at the 2010 SKUSA SuperNationals in the S5 category. |
