Presentation of 2010 US Rotax Max Challenge National Points Champions

In cooperation with the US Rotax Max Challenge, eKartingNews.com is proud to present the champions and top-10 of the seven Rotax categories that make up the National Points Standings. Over the next six weeks, we will examine one class per week to highlight those who were able to score highest in the points standings in 2010. The USRMC National Points Standings ranks drivers from 30 local and regional Rotax Max Challenge Series across the country using a weighted points system. The system uses only registered drivers to compute each participant’s points in the series they are competing, awarding bonus points when the number of participants reaches a minimum level. This system is not to be confused with the USRMC Grand Nationals, where the top drivers in the United States come together to crown the US Rotax Champions. The USRMC National Points system recognizes and awards all drivers who compete in the series at all levels. Many of these drivers are very talented and for various reasons will never have the opportunity to compete on the national scene, but remain the backbone of the US Rotax Max Challenge. For complete standings and an explanation of the points system go to http://www.usrmaxnrd.com

Mark Pelligrini

Senior

Nearly 200 drivers competed in the Senior category over the course of the 2010 season for the United States Rotax Max Challenge regional programs that counted toward the National Points Standings. New England area driver Mark Pelligrini captured the Senior title for the year thanks to his efforts in the Northeast Rotax Max Challenge. This year’s top-10 is diverse, with drivers representing seven regional programs (Northeast, LAKC, Northern California, MRP, South Florida, Southwest Regional Cup, Northwest) and no driver returning from 2009. Five of the top-10 competed at this year’s Grand Nationals with Daniel Formal coming away with the best finish (3rd) and a spot on Team USA for his effort. The top-10 also includes the Rotax Pan American Challenge champion - Jesus Rios Jr. - who joined Formal on Team USA in Italy.

Masters

An impressive 160 drivers scored points toward the US Rotax Max Challenge National Points Standings in 2010. Californian Steven Dzurilla came away on top of the tally after placing fourth one year ago. Three other drivers returned to the top-10 once again, including David Gildersleeve, Russell Hamel, and Mike Wilhelm. Six different regions were represented with Northeast leading the way with four drivers, and one from LAKC, MRP, Northern California, Baker’s Creek and South Florida. The top driver at the Rotax Grand Nationals to reach the top-10 is Hamel, who placed fifth back in July.

Keith Harris

Junior

At 169 drivers participating in a US Rotax Max Challenge regional event in 2010, the Junior division was one of the most competitive categories in all of karting. Five programs earned a spot in the top-10, including MRP, Northeast, SWRC, Northwest and South Florida - with the number one driver Keith Harris hailing from the MRP program for their second championship driver in just three categories. Only two drivers returned to the top-10 standings - Alec Udell and Brennan Harrington - with eight of the 10 placing in the top-30 at the Grand Nationals - led by Ryan Rupp in 10th place. Unlike last year, none of the top-10 competed at the Rotax Grand Finals, though Alec Udell earned a spot but declined due to a conflicting schedule. The Junior division also presents the first two females that earned top-10 status - Alexandra Gamache and Bristol Gunderson.

Mini Max

The second class for the top-10 presentations is Mini Max. Reserved for drivers in the 9-12 year old range, the Mini Max class was the former entry level category prior to the introduction of the Micro Max engine package. The Mini Max division has a strong contingent across the country, including the national level but more-so at the club and regional level. That equated to Indiana driver Ryan Bjerke earning the 2010 National Points Championship. Seven of the top-10 in Mini Max were not regular competitors in the Rotax Pan American Challenge and come from six different regional programs - MRP, Northwest Gold Cup, Southwest Regional Cup, Northern California, South Florida and Racing the Rockies. The top national competitor in this year’s top-10 is last year’s Micro Max champion Logan Sargeant.

Micro Max

New in 2008, the Micro Max category is continuing to grow throughout the country. A total of 89 drivers recorded points this season, up 19 from last year, with Anthony Gangi Jr. taking the top honor. The New York driver claimed both the National Points Standings and Grand National championships, similar to last year’s top driver Logan Sargeant. Half the drivers in the top-10 hail from the state of Florida, specifically the South Florida Rotax program while MRP, Northeast and Northwest series make up the other five positions.
