Making its debut at the SKUSA SuperNationals last year, the KF2 will return once again with roughly half the field coming from outside North America. The CIK recognized division will welcome some of the top drivers from Europe and around the world to Vegas. Last year’s inaugural winner Nicolaj Moller-Madsen is set to defend his crown.
The Energy Corse driver is coming off a solid 2010 season, highlighted by the European championship in KF2. After placing second in the WSK Euro Series program, Moller-Madsen finished the year third at the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship. Fellow Energy teammate Joel Johansson will return as well, placing fifth at last year’s event. Both will be targets throughout the week.
The third returning podium finisher from 2009 is American Gustavo Menezes. The Tony Kart Racing Team driver is set at posting another stellar SuperNationals performance. A former two-time winner at the event, the Californian is always a favorite when heading to Vegas. Aside from placing fourth in KF2 last year, Menezes was in the hunt for the TaG Senior win, only to lose it after contact in the final corners of the last lap. Menezes finished 11th this season in the WSK World Series and also produced solid results in the CIK-FIA European Championship.

Of the 25 drivers in this year’s field, only six return from last year’s event including the three mentioned above along with Jake Lloyd (Energy), American Andrick Zeen (SodiKart), Mason Marotta (Intrepid). Lloyd is a rising star from the UK and finishing ninth last year with Energy Corse America. Zeen has spent most of 2010 in Europe, competing in the GPO Series in France and the CIK-FIA U18 Championship with stellar results in the second half of the season. He will try to improve on a 14th from last year. Marotta was a Senior rookie last year, finishing 20th against a solid field. Coming back with more experience, the Leading Edge Motorsports driver could be in the lead pack come SuperSunday.
A number of drivers will be making their first KF2 start at the SuperNats, including a handful of rising stars from North America. Joey Wimsett (CRG) spent the year competing in the KF2 program here in the States, producing a third in the national championship. Wimsett was ninth in TaG Senior one year ago and fifth in 2008, so the podium is no stranger to the Oregon driver. One driver that made the jump to the top is Canadian Phillip Orcic. The Richmond, British Columbia driver competed in the Super KF category on the international stage after racing in the Junior ranks in 2009. Orcic finished sixth in TaG Junior at last year’s SuperNats.
One driver who has yet to record a strong SuperNats finish is Brett Felkins. The Intrepid driver competed in TaG Senior in ’08, missing out on the main event and recorded a DNF in S3 last year. In KF2 competition recently, the 17-year old is coming off a solid performance last month in a warm-up event with two main event wins against the top drivers in the country. Trent Hindman enters the KF2 field as the youngest driver. Making the move up from KF3, the SSC East/CRG driver will make his KF2 debut. Progressing up to open wheel cars this season, Hindman has done double duty as he spent the last few months preparing for Vegas in regional karting action.
