| Industry News: Supertune USA - March Report |
| |
While poles, wins, and fastest laps are becoming commonplace for Supertune USA this season, the month of March brought the first cherry on its racing cake as Supertune now has its first Championship of 2010. It came just as the month began, when Richard Benitez captured the inaugural Championship Karting International Florida Cup for rotax senior - and the Mazda 3 that went with it! Supertune also saw its numbers climb by three more wins, six more poles and nine more podiums.
“I’m very happy with the numbers, especially with it only being April,” said Supertune USA Technical Director Ben Cruttenden over the Easter Weekend. “Nine poles, eight wins and thirty-five podiums from the winter schedules is fantastic, and obviously it couldn’t have been done without having working relationships with great teams such as DeFrancesco Racing and J3 Competition. Richard winning the CKI Championship against such strong competition was a obviously big highlight.”
Without a doubt Benitez was a star of the Florida Cup in taking six consecutive pole positions on his way to the Rotax Senior Championship. At Homestead for the finale, Benitez took second on Saturday and secured the championship on Sunday with second in the prefinal. His J3 Competition teammate Alessandra Madrigal also wrapped up a strong Florida Cup, crossing fourth and second on the weekend to finish second overall in the Rotax Junior Championship. In the DeFrancesco Racing tent, Kyle Kirkwood took another pair of Cadet pole positions while Junior driver Dore Chaponick started on the front row both days as well. Each driver completed the championship fourth in their respective class.

Ocala Gran Prix was the venue for the final Florida Winter Tour rounds of the year and once again Supertune USA had poles and wins from both the Rotax Max Challenge and Formula Kart classes. Jack West was the first Supertune driver to star as he took pole and swept the first race day in Rotax Junior. Patricio O’Ward also took a podium spot, and Canadian Grant Quinlan just missed one in finishing fourth.
Completing the Florida swing at the Formula Kart weekend, both Kirkwood and Chaponick took Saturday wins, Kirkwood doing so after starting the day from the front row and winning both prefinal and final with the fastest laps in the field. Devlin DeFrancesco also had a great Saturday in qualifying third, following Kirkwood across the line in the prefinal and finishing fourth in the main. He went one better on Sunday finishing third, a day where Chaponick also finished third after taking pole position and winning the prefinal.
The month of April will see Supertune USA support its drivers and teams at a pair of very high profile events. This coming weekend is the first as the WSK North American Series by CKI begins at New Castle Motorsport Park in New Castle, Indiana, and the month will close at MSR Houston when the Pan American Rotax Max Challenge begins in Angleton, Texas.
