Devlin DeFrancesco wrapped up his Florida Winter Tour over the weekend by standing on the podium once again at Ocala Gran Prix. Running the final two races of the Vortex TaG Cadet Championship, the ten-year-old was fourth on Saturday and third on Sunday. It was his second podium run of the series, one in which he never finished outside of the top five.
The final weekend of back-to-back at Ocala began well when DeFrancesco qualified third in a strange split session, and after getting a great start he jumped to a front row starting spot for the main after finishing second and setting the second fastest lap in the field. The spot proved to bring more harm than good though, as he washed wide at the start of the main before slotting into fifth. He passed back to fourth on the second lap running through turn one, but despite bettering his best lap time five times in the next six laps he could do no more than inch toward the leaders who had escaped in the opening corners. DeFrancesco never gave up the fight for the podium, and actually set his best lap of the race on fifteen of sixteen in finishing fourth.
Sunday morning he qualified in the same spot when karts two, three, and four all clocked identical 39.7 second laps! The close racing continued in the prefinal when the top three karts each posted better laps at 39.5 seconds, and DeFrancesco advanced his position by finishing third. This set him up much better for the final run of the winter, but the whole game changed after the skies opened. After a wild weather delay, the Cadets took to a wet track to wrap up their winter tour. DeFrancesco capitalized to take second at the start, but a fight for the position running through the Ocala hairpins saw him fall to fifth. There he fell into line for three laps, and just one lap after passing back into fourth, he assumed a podium position running through turn one and ran clear the rest of the way.
The weekend’s work led to fourth in the Cadet Championship, and added to P18 from the FWT Rotax Mini-Max Championship and P7 from the Championship Karting International Florida Cup. CKI is where DeFrancesco and his team will now set their sights, as the WSK North American Series by CKI begins April 9th at New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, Indiana, and kicks off a very busy summer season. |
