The best of 250 participating drivers arrived for the first round of the WSK Euro karting series at La Conca International Circuit in Muro Leccese (Lecce, Italy) ran non-stop all over the day. The 34 best drivers qualified in the relative eligible classes have performed in a highly competitive series of races not lacking of surprises.
Managing to recover after a broken chain in the heats, he got a perfect score in the Final. Italian Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) has been in the lead throughout the crucial race though constantly watching his back: French Armand Convers (Kosmic-Vortex-Vega) and Dutch Nick De Vries (Zanardi-Parilla-Vega) have been always in the wave of the leader and ready to join in the struggle for win. Being involved in swapping the position each other, they lost for this reason the contact with Ardigò just at the finishing post. De Vries’ successful attack for the second place has introduced the first success of the year for the Tony Kart driver, who now leads the ranking at 56 points, above De Vries (41) and Convers (40). Fourth in the championship is English Ben Cooper (Kosmic-Vortex-Vega), 2009 KF2 champion who, competing now in an upper class has scored well. The outgoing champion, French Arnaud Kozlinski (CRG-Maxter-Vega) ranks only fifth, due to a few penalties during the starting procedure that slowed him down.
After an hidden start, the KZ1 outgoing champion Dutch Bas Lammers (Intrepid-TM-Dunlop), was very pugnacious from the Pre-final onwards. In that race, Lammers managed to recover up to a second place behind the winner Jonathan Thonon (CRG-Maxter-Dunlop) who therefore was the candidate most likely to win the final race. In the crucial race instead, Paolo De Conto (Energy-TM-Dunlop) the best among KZ2 participating drivers, surprised everybody. Making the most of the struggle between the first two contestants, he sprinted and took the lead from the start until almost half race. Soon after, launching a decisive attack, Lammers snatched the lead from De Conto who was then overtaken also by Thonon. French Jeremy Iglesias (Intrepid-TM-Dunlop) went to complete KZ1 podium, whereas in KZ2, German Marcel Jelenioski (Energy-TM-Dunlop) and Polish Daniel Fuchs (Birel-TM-Dunlop) came in behind De Conto.
Dutch Max Verstappen (CRG-Maxter-Dunlop), the twelve-year-old son of the former F.1 driver Jos Verstappen, couldn’t better repay his apprehensive father and his so authoritative advice. Verstappen’s debut at the WSK has been successful, seeing that he masterfully achieved both Pre-final and Final. Italian Loris Spinelli (Intrepid-TM-Dunlop) tried to catch up with him but a penalty prevented him from mounting the podium. So, Dutch Peter Hoevenaars (Intrepid-TM-Dunlop) and French Anthoine Hubert (Tony Kart-Vortex-Dunlop) finished close behind the winner.
He had first won the final race in 2009 and has now repeated himself at the opening of the new year. Italian Ignazio D’Agosto (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) is the first KF2 incoming leader, after dominating since the timing practice every single stage of the weekend. Behind D’agosto, Brazilian Guilherme Silva (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) emerged ahead of Danish Nikolaj Moeller Madsen (Energy-TM-Vega). The latter has gained the podium beating his pugnacious countrywoman Michelle Gatting (CRG-Maxter-Vega). |
