Alonso Kart and DeFrancesco Racing pilot, Cole Glasson, made his Florida Winter Tour debut this past weekend in Orlando. Cole had his work cut out to get up to speed on the track as he would be facing 44 Mini Max drivers from 8 different countries, many of whom had more track time from the previous FWT weekend. After practice on Friday, Cole was sitting in the 20th position of the 44 kart field which would put him in the 2nd group for qualifying.
Saturday’s qualifying put him in P19 and an automatic transfer to the finals. In the prefinal, Cole made some great moves early and quickly worked his way through the field running much of the race in P9 before a late pass had him fall to 11th to begin the final. After a promising prefinal moving him up 9 spots and continually getting quicker, he felt good about the finals, but that was quickly ended when the start carried him to P9 going into turn 2 where an on track incident found Cole sandwiched between two karts and a tie rod severely bent. Cole was able to get the kart back on the track and finished the race in P29.
Sunday brought rain early which caused the practice session to be on rain tires and a potential gamble for qualifying as the track was not completely dry. The entire field qualified on slicks, but Cole had a hard time making it through any lap without sliding giving him poor qualifying run and finding him taking the last automatic transfer spot into the finals at P28. However, it seemed to be a repeat of Saturday as Cole quickly moved up at the start finding himself in P24 coming out of Turn 1 and moving up to P20 by the end of the race. While Saturday’s final ended in disappointment, Cole ended the weekend on a great note taking his Alonso Kart all the way to P9 until the last lap where he dropped to P11 for the finish but had the 6th fastest time on the track in the final. Cole is poised to finish in the top 10 the next round when he returns to Palm Beach.
Cole would like to thank DeFrancesco Racing who supported him this weekend along with his teammates Dore Chaponick, Jack West, Kyle Kirkwood, and Devlin Defrancesco along with their tuners. In addition, special thanks to Ben and Tony Cruttenden of Supertune USA and Bobby Wilson, Team Manager and Andy DeFrancesco, Team Owner.
