| EKN Exclusive: SKUSA SuperNationals XIII - S4 Preview |
| |
From the day that the final checkered flag waved and the competitors packed up under their gear in the paddock one year ago, the 13th annual Superkarts! USA SuperNationals has been in everyone’s mind. Set for November 18-22, over 400 drivers will head into battle at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino for what is expected to be the biggest and brightest karting event in the sport’s history. Drivers from all over North America and around the world will compete in an effort to score one of the nine class victories, all focused on placing their name into the SKUSA history books. eKartingNews.com has slated the days leading up to the event for an in-depth look at the entry list and the major players in each of the categories. We have seen the TaG Junior, S5, G1 and TaG Masters categories, today we highlight S4. Coming up will be KF2, S3 and TaG Senior, all leading up to the headline SuperPro category.

S4
The S4 division will compete at the SuperNationals for fourth time and the 2009 entry list is certainly its largest and most talented field to date. Considered the ‘Heavy’ division for the Stock Moto package - allowing over 30 year old drivers or those above the 200 lbs minimum driver weight, the S4 category gives competitors with similar stature and experience the opportunity to go head-to-head. With last year’s champion Chris Jennings moving over to the S3 category, the door is open for anyone to take the reigns.
The pre-race favorites include the returning podium finishers - Mike Jones (Zanardi), Craig Sender (Intrepid) and Steve Perdue (Intrepid). Jones ran to the runner-up finish in last year’s event and this past season, he earned three IKF Road Race Duffys while setting up a new Texas outfit - The Kart Shop. Sender and Perdue represent the Northwest Race Karts squad, running fourth and fifth in ’08, and they are looking to cash in for better spots on the podium this time around.

Though Jennings will not be able to defend his title, former two-time winner Jeff Littrell (Tony Kart) returns to his old stomping grounds of S4. Running a respectable 12th last year in the G1 division, Littrell is searching for his third trip to the top of the podium. His 2Wild Karting teammate - Doug Hayashi - the leader of the famed Pulp Racing cult, finished third in 2007 and is capable of repeating the feat once more.
A number of drivers have looked solid during the summer months and will be among those challenging for the victory. Cambrian Go-Karts’ Jamie Wilson (Birel) was the ProKart Challenge North S4 champion with three main event victories and will be making his first start at the SuperNats. Aluminos’ Peter Workum (Intrepid) and Alex Keith (CRG) of Infinity Kart Services were his closets rivals on the year and both will be making a return to Vegas. Rick Freund (GP) and Jack Kloeber (Wildkart) had a back and forth battle within the Central States Challenge program. Freund, however, came away with the title as both drivers will be running under the new Crockett Motorsports tent. A wildcard to watch for will be the performance of 21-year old Alex Raine (CRG). The 2007 Rotax Grand Nationals Masters champion and ’08 runner-up is certainly talented. Working with Team RPG and veteran karter Mike Rolison, the combination could be victorious.
