WSK International Series - Lonato Report

And with this, we come to seven in all. It’s up to seven the international karting meetings the WSK Promotion has brought all over Europe with its WSK International Series. The last round, finally awarding the top title, namely the Super KF, gets to an end today in Lonato (BS) with a string of exciting races, to say the least. The only champion missing to the list of 2009 winners has been crowned by now. It’s French Arnaud Kozlinski (CRG-Maxter-Bridgestone) who literally grabbed the title at the last minute, snatching it from Italian Sauro Cesetti (Birel-Parilla-Bridgestone). Here’s a win that is worth telling.

Arnaud Kozlinski reached Lonato with a 15-point gap from the leader Cesetti. The latter, owing to few mechanical troubles, couldn’t perform as expected and failed to score over the weekend. Anyway, Kozlinski had no easy ride seeing that, due to the required discard of points, he needed to achieve at least a second place to beat Cesetti and win the championship. His rivals’ pugnacity kept him under pressure well beyond half the Final when Tony Kart-Vortex pair, that is Italian Marco Ardigò and English Gary Catt, seemed to be monopolizing the first two positions. In case of Catt’s victory, the title would have been awarded to the English driver and at times, he appeared to be close to his goal. But towards the end, Catt was forced to stop for the broken engine. Therefore Ardigò, leading since the early stages, had only to pay attention to Kozlinski that staying second behind him, set off to win WSK title being assured by now. Finally, a third place and with great credit (he even took the lead for a short time) was gained by Czech Zdenek Groman (Maranello-Parilla-Bridgestone).

Italian Ignazio D’Agosto (Tony Kart-Vortex-Bridgestone) mastered KZ2 Final with no apparent problems and managed to win his first WSK race at last. Actually, the Apulian driver had already prepared the ground for success in the Pre-final, performing well in the challenge against Danish Moeller Madsen (Energy-TM-Bridgestone) who then emerged victorious. Also Japanese Yu Kanamaru (Tony Kart-Vortex-Bridgestone), wishing to have a part in the running, seized at any time the opportunity to join in the rush for win. Starting on the first line in the Final, D’Agosto launched his attack and went into the lead in no time; he then looked out for the opponents that followed him but were still very pugnacious. Moeller Madesen achieved finally a second place. Behind him, Ben Cooper (Tony Kart-Vortex-Bridgestone) came third at Kanamaru’s expense. And with this last and deserved podium, the English guy has ended a season where he has been holding already the class title since the previous round.

They competed against each other throughout the year. Between Russian Danil Kvyat (Intrepid-TM-Dunlop) and Dutch Nyck De Vries (Zanardi-Parilla-Dunlop), it was the latter to achieve the championship title since he has reached South Garda having already the victory in the bag. However, Kvyat wished to close with a prestigious win and he has achieved his goal. In today’s Final, nobody succeeded in stopping the Muscovite driver chasing for success, except for Swiss Michael Hache, a brand-mate of his, catching up with him for a short time. They two crossed the finish line in that order, followed by Italian Raffaele Marciello. Less fortunate was Nick De Vries who couldn’t celebrate his championship win with a fitting performance. Lots of troubles forced the Dutch guy to slow down, including a few touches with the adversaries causing him to lose many positions. In spite of an amazing recovery, De Vries couldn’t even see the finishing post because of technical hitches forcing him to an early stop.

This will be the conclusive meeting even for the WSK TV special, scheduled next Friday on Rai Più Sport, with the summery on the weekend in Lonato, both on the satellite channel and digital. After which, there will be already the year 2010 with the plentiful schedule the WSK has drawn up for next year: World Series, Euro Series, Master Series and Nations Cup will constitute a 12-event calendar, to which may be added the six events our CKI American partners have planned for the WSK North American Series beyond the Atlantic.
