| Rotax Euro Challenge Salbris Preview |
| |
This weekend sees the stage set for some exciting racing at the fourth and final round of the Rotax Euro Challenge, as the winners of all four classes of the 2009 series remain undecided going into the Salbris event in France.
The Sologne Karting circuit at 1475m is one of the extremely popular tracks on the Euro tour and definitely no stranger to hosting some of the more prestigious race meetings in the CIK history books, where many titles have been determined. They boast five World Championships beginning from 1997 when five times World Champ Danilo Rossi (I) and James Courtney (Aus) claimed the crowns, which Sologne track owner Marc Berteaux recalls as one of the most memorable for him, “There were many drivers and some of the best; like Rossi, Manetti and so many more. The racing was great and very special for us.” Salbris has also been the chosen venue for around 20 European Championship events including the Euro Challenge, since it was originally opened back in 1990.
When it comes to the 2009 title, there’s no clear-cut leader that is guaranteed to be holding the European Rotax Champion’s trophy at the prize-giving ceremony. Team-mates Josh Webster and Luke Varley from the UK’s Strawberry Racing team currently fill the top spot in Junior and Senior Max respectively, while French driver Jerome Bourquard has a narrow lead in the Max Masters. The 2-speed Rotax DD2 class sees only three points separating series front-runner Maik Barten of the Netherlands from his closest rival Ralph Odendaal. However, the competition is close and there are numerous drivers amongst the 130 coming from almost 30 nations who are still capable of achieving a podium finish.
Official timed practice gets underway today following morning practice, with a full race program Saturday filled with the qualifying heats to determine how Sunday’s finals will line-up.
