Thomas Knopper lost his life in an accident on Sunday, August 9 during the fourth round of the German Karting Championship (DKM) in Liedolsheim, Germany. The 19 year old Dutch driver from Bilthoven crashed immediately after the start when he collided with another competitor. The German police has not released full details of the incident that left other drivers involved with injuries.
Thomas was one of the biggest Dutch talents in karting. Besides several Dutch Championship titles and winning one of the four Rotax Max Euro Challenge rounds in 2004, his biggest achievement was to become the ICC European Champion in 2007.
In 2008, he made his debut in Formula Renault 2.0L, but decided to go back to karting; the sport he loved the most. Thomas had rejoined the AVG Racing team for this year’s karting season. He was a very experienced and successful driver, but above all, he was a friendly sportsman who loved to race! The finish came to early...
All karting drivers/teams and fans are invited to write their condolences to the family of Thomas.
