Heartland Park Topeka was once again the site for the KART Enduro National Championships. This year’s quest for the “Triad” was held on June 26-28. To prove what a favorite this track is with the racers, this was the best-ever attended KART Enduro National Championships. The solid fields enjoyed both safe and fair racing, evidenced by the fact the ambulance never even moved from its location, and there were no protests. The weather was very warm to say the least on both Friday and Saturday and everyone appreciated being treated to water at the scales. Mother Nature turned the heat off a bit for Sunday’s contests.

Included in the event were the United States SuperKarts, and their beautiful machines truly enhanced the show for everyone. Saturday evening, the KART Mid America Road Race Series sponsored a BBQ complete with both non-alcohol and adult beverages, followed by an Awards’ Presentation for the first two days of racing. Everyone enjoyed the food and camaraderie. The Mid-American Road Racing Series (MARRS) staff and competitors is famous for being a big family, and these types of get-togethers just make that more evident. Thanks especially to Jim Edgington for putting this together, and to an anonymous donor who stepped forward with the money to make this happen.

Both Anthony Honeywell and Aaron Telitz were triple winners, Honeywell in Sprint Yamaha CIK I, 100cc Open and A-Limited while Telitz won Sprint Stock Leopard Sr. I and II along with Sprint TaG Sr. II. A third Briggs and Stratton Animal lay-down class was added just for this event and there was a different winner in each: Mike Baldus, Kelly Read and Doug Kittelson. Anyone that entered all three of these classes was entered into a drawing for a brand-new Animal engine furnished by Briggs & Stratton, and Jim Edgington was the winner of this drawing. The class has been a great addition to the MARRS program and KART, giving a place for the older guys that no longer want to run 100+ miles an hour or even the not so old but just don’t feel “the need for speed” quite as much as they used to, but still love the competition and aren’t ready to “hang it up” just yet a place where they can keep their competitive juices flowing.

Tres Generaciones of Baldus men: 14 year old Pierce won both Piston Port Can I & II, 66 year old Mike was a winner in B & S Animal Sportsman I, and 44 year old Bernie was a winner in (Yamaha) Sportsman II (Photo: kart.org)
