Top-notch competition ruled the day in Saturday’s heat races at Championship Karting International’s Grand Prix of New Jersey. But the highlights didn’t end with the class competition as the first annual CKI Tuners Challenge was held immediately following the class heats, as well as a CKI-sponsored Cook-Out for everyone as the track – stay tuned for the results. Here’s a summary of what’s to come in the finals.
KF3
In the hotly contested KF3 class, Phil DeLaO claimed victory in 2 of the 3 heats to earn the pole position for Sunday. Taylor Miinch kept pace with a first and two 2nds, earning a spot in the first row. Shawn Sharkey was consistently in the top five to wrap up the third position for Sunday.
KF2
In KF2, Arie Ouimet started on the pole and delivered with victories in all 3 heats. While Ouimet was in control, the field steadily made time up – he took the first heat by 5-plus seconds, the second by 3 and the third heat by just over 1 second. Chris Wehrheim will be a force on Sunday as he wrapped the 2nd position with 2 top fives. Brett Felkins also had a strong day, grabbing the 3rd spot for Sunday.
Rotax Masters
In the Rotax Masters, Russell Hamel was a force winning all three heats to wrap up the pole for Sunday. Thomas Healy performed consistently throughout the day, taking the outside pole for Sunday with 2 thirds and a second, while Chris Rock grabbed two second place finishes.
Cadet
Some of the best racing always takes place in the Cadet class, and another day of classic competition was on display. Gresham Wagner, earning second place finishes in all three heats, took the pole position for Sunday. Local entry Ryan Raffa was also impressive with a win and two 4ths, earning the outside spot on front row. Santino Ferrucci showed tenacity coming back from a 9th place result in the first heat to win the 2nd heat and 3rd in the day’s final contest to earn third position for Sunday.
IAME Jr.
Camden Geise took the Sunday pole for the IAME Junior class, with a victory and two seconds. Taylor Miinch was strong on throughout, taking a first, second and third – earning him the outside pole for Sunday. Rachel Martinez rounds out the top three, getting stronger in each race with two thirds and a victory in the 3rd heat.
IAME Sr.
In IAME Sr. Andre Nicastro was the story – winning all three heats in strong fashion. Kyle Wiegand also had a big day, taking second in all three heats. Third place for Sunday’s pole was neck and neck with Neil Alberico edging out Tyler Wheeler and Eric Jones with 2 top fives and a third place result.
KZ2
There was plenty of action in the always entertaining KZ2 Class. After a spin out in the first heat dropped Gary Carlton to the back of pack in the first race, he came on strong to dominate the second and third heats to take the pole on Sunday. Fritz Leesmann took 2nd in all three heats, putting the pressure on Carlton and Gregory Liefooghe, with a win in the first heat and top fives all day, will be factor from the 3rd spot on Sunday.
SpeedCastTV.com will provide a live videocast, airing all the Prefinal and Finals action plus a post-race ‘F1-style debrief’ of all classes represented on the weekend. Following updates throughout the day in the eKartingNews.com Official Discussion Thread. |
