Many of the country’s top line kart racers will be in Melbourne later this week (Friday and Saturday) for the second round of the Australian CIK Championship, held alongside the Rotax Pro Tour, at VACC Park in Port Melbourne.
After a hiatus of almost five years the CIK Championship, using similar engines and tyres to the ones used in the World and European Championships, returned to Australian circuits last month.
The rejuvenated series has attracted a variety of interest from different parts of the country and New Zealand, following the opening round held in Newcastle last month it is New South Welshman Damien Radosevic who is leading in the points standings.
Radosevic, who made his debut in the high-horsepower machines at the opening round using a ‘lease’ engine, thoroughly enjoyed the racing and is now looking forward to completing the entire series.
Two drivers who will be out to make amends on a disappointing opening round at Newcastle are Kiwi Mitch Cunningham, current New Zealand Formula Toyota Champion, and former Australian Champion Tyson Pearce. They both showed glimpses of their true potential in round one before being plagued by mechanical issues in the two main events.
Western Australian karting stalwart Steven Scoble will line up for his debut in the CIK Championship this weekend. A regular front runner in the 100cc Clubman Light class, Scoble has been eager to race in Australia’s highest powered category for many years after getting a taste for the CIK style of racing when his father Mark was a mechanic for fellow West Aussie Daniel Elliott almost ten years ago
Over 100 drivers will line up in the five categories that make up the Rotax Pro Tour with drivers varying in age from 13 years old in the Formula JMA category through to the older generation in Rotax Over 35’s.
Melbourne teenager Luke Rochford won the opening event in Newcastle of the Formula JMA category when two of his major rivals, Chris Hays and Josh De Maio, were left on the sidelines in the final. This trio will form just three of a very talented 35-strong driver line up in the category.
Another Melbourne driver who continues to take the Australian karting scene by storm is David Sera. In the opening Rotax Pro Tour Sera was again the dominant driver and will be tough to beat in this week’s event.
Qualifying will be held on Friday morning followed by heat races in the afternoon. The Pre-Final and Finals will be contested throughout Saturday. VACC Park is located on the corner of Todd Road & Cook Street, Port Melbourne. |
