Toowoomba’s Brendan Nelson was the star of the show during the opening round of the 2009 Supercheap Auto Kart Series hosted by the Ipswich Kart Club over the weekend.

After qualifying second fastest, a mere 0.002 of a second from the fastest qualifier Cian Fothergill, in the Pro Clubman Light category Nelson finished in second place behind Ben Stewart in the opening race.

Nelson turned the tables in the remaining two races to claim the win. Race two was a narrow victory following a race long duel with Justin Garioch, Fothergill and Stewart and the third race was a comfortable win by the 17 year-old.

Fothergill turned the tables on Nelson in the 125cc Leopard Light category with a consistent run across the three races to claim the overall victory. An incident in the opening heat with Ryan Wlodzinski ended Nelson’s chances of overall victory, however, both he and Wlodzinski put on a scintillating display of close racing during the remaining two races.

Ipswich youngster Sean Butcher won two of the three races in the Pro Junior National category with Sam Lumsden finishing in second place ahead of James Foster.

Mackay’s Bevan Garioch won the Pro Clubman Heavy class ahead of Ben McKinlay and Darren Suhle.

Nicholas Andrews and Dylan Higgins shared the spoils during the opening two races in the Rookies class before Andrews came out on top in the final race. Joshua Smith was consistent to finish with three third places and secure the final spot on the podium.

Paul Vuichoud won Leopard Heavy and Jamie Grohman won the battle of the youngsters in the Midgets category.

Series Organiser John Lane was pleased with the support of the series shown by karting competitors from all across the state.

“In the end we finished with 126 entries across the seven categories, which was a great result and every one of the drivers thoroughly enjoyed racing at the Ipswich track,” said Lane.

“The series uses a race format which is new to Australian karting but all of the competitors seemed to give it the thumbs up and I’m looking forward to the next round in Gladstone during June.”
