The 20th edition of the Andrea Margutti Trophy was run at ‘Pista 7 Laghi’ in Castelletto di Branduzzo (Pavia). This classical International karting race was this year recognized by “FIA Authorised Series” and organized since 1990 in memory of Andrea Margutti, 15-year-old roman driver who tragically died in Parma on the 14th October 1989 during qualifying session of the Industry Karting Trophy.
The winners of this edition which for the first time took place on the track of Castelletto di Branduzzo, with drivers from 28 countries, were the Russian Daniil Kvyat (Tony Kart-Vortex-Dunlop) in category KF3, the Frenchman Brandon Maisano (Intrepid-Tm-Bridgestone) in KF2 and the Brit Jack Hawksworth (Energy-Tm-Vega) in KZ2.
During the final of KF3, after the Dutch Nyck De Vries (Zanardi-Parilla) led four laps, it was the Russian Daniil Kvyat (Tony Kart-Vortex) to come ahead for the final 16 laps left to gain the victory preceding De Vries and Raffaele Marciello (Intrepid-Tm), who performed a fantastic progression from the 15th position. The other expected protagonist, the Spanish Carlos Sainz Junior (FA Kart-Vortex), who started from the first row soon lost ground and finished 7th.
In KF2, the French Brandon Maisano (Intrepid-Tm) was the leader early and won with a large advantage ahead of the other drivers. Matteo Viganò (Birel-Parilla) started from the fourth position and was classified six seconds behind the winner, while Antonio Maria Giovinazzi (Top Kart-Parilla) won the third place of the podium. The Finnish Aaro Vainio (Maranello-Maxter) wasn’t able to run the final, even if he was protagonist in the qualifying heats, because of an accident with Viganò in semifinal that forced him to withdraw while fighting for the third place.
In KZ2 both the French Manuel Renaudie (Gillard-Sgm) and Alessandro Manetti (AM-Tm) missed a chance at victory because the Frenchman had a bad start from the pole, the Italian for having been stuck in a jam at the beginning of the race. The Brit Jack Hawksworth (Energy-Tm) won this race in a final rush ahead of Frenchman Anthony Abbasse (Sodi-Tm). Renaudie recovered up to the third place of the podium although he was slipped back to 6th position at the beginning of the final. At the end of the race Manetti, who finished 6th, was disqualified for being underweight.
Very satisfied at the end of the event was Tiziano Pellegrini, organizer and President of ‘Parma Karting Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica’: “I am really very happy for being able to positively conclude this 20th edition of the Margutti Trophy. We are proud indeed for we have been keeping the race at a high level for so many years. We had to leave Parma Circuit because our lease was finished. At the beginning we were supposed to run this race abroad, that is in Valencia, but due to environmental problems of the last minute it was therefore impossible for us to use that new Spanish circuit. We were then very lucky as the organizers of the circuit ‘7 Laghi’ gave their availability so to let us carry on this important tradition of the Margutti Trophy. This new logistic choice was at the end very happy and we are of course grateful for the granted hospitality. We are thinking about the future development of the Trophy, mean while let’s enjoy this satisfaction for this 20th finish”.
