A number of terrific stories developed Monday at the WKA Dunlop Road Racing Series driven by Mazda Daytona Championships. Seven race groups took to the 3.5-mile Daytona road course for their 30- and 45-minute feature races.

“The important thing was that it was a clean, safe day,” race director Brandon Taylor said Monday evening at the 2008 Road Racing awards banquet. “I feel like things went pretty smoothly and overall we had a good day. From what I could watch, it looked like there was some great racing going on out there, and we’re hoping Tuesday goes just as smooth so we can all return home safe for New Years.”

The Formula 100 class saw three family members sweep top-three positions. Lance Fry, Brandon Fry and father Jim Fry finished first, second and third, making it an all-Fry podium. Absolutely an great accomplishment for the Fry Racing family from Georgia.

Always a top story in Daytona karting, Randy Fulks made sure the ’08 headlines included him when he won the 45-minute Yamaha Sportsman Medium event. It wasn’t just any win for the Illinois veteran, as it would mark Fulks’ 40th career win in Road Racing events at Daytona. Fulks has been doing it a long time, and looks poised to continue his winning ways at Daytona and the rest of the WKA Road Racing events for many years to come.

David Bruinsma started the day with a come-from-behind win in PP Can Sprint 360. The Florida racer led the 16-kart field early before getting caught up in a minor accident with a lap kart. Behind Kevin Learnard, Scott Clark and Dawn Magiera by a few seconds, Bruinsma drove his way back to the front, taking the lead on the final straightaway to add to his growing list of Daytona Championship triumphs. Domenic Greog and Andrew Boyer won their races in the same race group.

Tim Jennings (100cc Controlled), Kansas’ Justin Taylor (100cc Pipe Heavy) and Brad Zoeller (PP Can Heavy) drove to victory in Race Group No. 2. One of the big stories of the day would become Zoeller, who would capture a second victory in Race Group No. 3 in WKA 125 Sprint. Zoeller won the race in a photo finish (+0.007 seconds) over Tracy Phillips.

Other winners in Group No. 3 were Midwest racer Josh Lane (CIK 125 Sprint) and Noah Stark in Stock Honda.

A large field of Briggs Animal karts took to the track in Group No. 4. Approximately 20 karts started in both Briggs Animal 335 and 385. Mike Stroik drove to a close win in 335 over Regan Vehring while Bret Spaude, who is entered in nine classes at Daytona, returned to victory lane in 385. Also on the track in Group 4 was Briggs Jr Sprint Lite, won by Tom Smith; Stock Leopard, won by Jim Russell Jr; and WKA Sprint, won by Woodbridge Kart Club regular Scott Clark.

PP Can Lite featured an all-female top three. Lindsay Walkup-Fox took the win, followed by Mallory Davis and Courtney Atkinson. Alex Marchese drove to victory in Jr Enduro Lite while Fulks notched his 40th Daytona win in Yamaha Sportsman Medium. All three classes were in Group No. 5.

Group No. 6 saw longtime Road Racing competitor Jim Farr take the win over Bret Spaude in B Stock. The win would precede Farr’s induction in the WKA Hall of Fame at the awards banquet later that night. The aforementioned Fry family dominated the top three spots in Formula 100, while Brian Wilhelm won Formula 125. Also on the track was Unlimited Final 1, won by Jim Russell Jr.

The final race of the day was Group No. 7, comprised of two sprint classes – one popular local option and one national class. Nick Weil took the win in the local option Open Sprint class. The growing division saw 12 karts take the green flag. Spec 125 Sprint TaG 1 was the source of some controversy. Virginia’s Donny Warren III crossed the line first but was later disqualified for pushing in an effort to keep the Road Racing events as safe as possible. The win would then go to Chuck Gafrarar. Kevin Learnard was second and Bret Spaude rounded out the top three in the class that featured a lead pack of seven karts drafting and dicing for the win.
