| IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals - Preview |
| |
Racing begins today at the Wayne Brown Memorial International Kart Federation 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals at the Santa Maria Kart Track, hosted by the Santa Maria Karting Association. The week long event saw unofficial practice begin July 27 and run to July 29 with official practice on July 30. Four days of racing starts today at the Santa Maria, California facility, located roughly 170 miles up the coast from downtown Los Angeles. The 7/10-mile circuit, in the K-layout, sits at the Santa Maria Public Airport
The event is titled after Wayne Brown - who suddenly passed away January 18, 2008 after suffering a heart attack at his home in Double Oak, Texas. Brown was a longtime member of IKF earning the sports highest awards as a driver and motor builder, while also devoting his time to help the sport grow. He served on multiple Board of Directors for both local clubs and national organizations, including serving as IKF President at the time of his death. Everyone at the event will be racing in his honor.
One program Brown spearheaded was the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence Award. The perpetual award, honoring the 1978 World Karting Champion, will honor its third recipient this week. The past two winners, Nick Johnston (2007) and Matt Johnson (2006), along with a panel of scouts will help select the new recipient - of which could be a driver, team, kart shop or combination thereof. The winner will be determined based on a multitude of criteria including sportsmanship , competitive achievement, benevolence and professional appearance during the event.
The drivers will be racing this week for a chance at one of the prestigious IKF Duffy’s. With 17 classes running over the four days, the competition will be heated. A special class added to this year’s event is the IAME Cup class. The winner of the IAME Cup class - driver’s running the Parilla Leopard engine - will be invited to participate in the IAME International Challenge, thanks to Russell Karting and Italian Motors. The two-day racing event was won last year by Canadians David Jurca and Michael Hogg.
Sean Buur and Go Racing Magazine will be providing daily reports and photos from Santa Maria. To discuss the event or watch for updates from those there in the paddock, visit the Official Discussion Thread.
